The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
