Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
