The artist has donated the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which works to preserve the UK's grassroots music venues.

He was presented with the award on mid-October as his third album People Watching was declared the outstanding release of the past year.

Fender has decided to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the essential function small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the gigs I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – roughly 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, major artists like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to support the industry, by including a small levy to their ticket costs, which benefits local stages.

He also took part, raising in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to help 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

These funds assisted venues that were facing possible closure due to issues stemming from water damage, blazes and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, court cases and neighbor objections.

Other venues obtained financial assistance in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that helped musicians and fans.

"The notion that revenue from concerts in major spaces backs the local stages, where it all starts for artists like me, is just logical," Fender has said.

The musician is not the first artist to give his honor winnings to worthy causes.

When the band earned the prize in the mid-90s for their record Different Class, frontman Cocker declared that the act would contribute their prize money to the non-profit the charity.

In 2002, artist Ms Dynamite shared her award between several good causes, such as the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also contributed a grand to the center, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked updated gear," Ms Dynamite explained to a publication.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective donated their funds to the local youth club that nurtured their group, as well as other independent music bodies.

Also winners that year M People gave their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was diagnosed the illness.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," stated vocalist Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our winning affected the lives of others."

Recently, the trust announced it had protected two grassroots venues in south-east England, by placing them under public stewardship.

The Joiners in that area and the other in the city were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is funded by a national body and enthusiasts who buy "ownership units" in the buildings.
