Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
